Bathampton Scouts followed in the footsteps of their Chief Scout – Bear Grylls – famed for his survival and TV programmes.
The Scouts aged 10 ½ to 15 spent 4 evenings at www.hiddenwoods.co.uk on the outskirts of Bath, leaning how to make penny stoves using old cans and then boiling water on them to make their hot drinks. The Scouts learnt different types of fire lighting methods including a fire bow, flint and striker and how to make feather sticks and how fire is used for cooking, signalling, warmth and light.

Not a grizzly bear but their Chief Scout – Bear Grylls – famed for his survival and bushcraft TV programmes. Leaders from across Bath joined Explorer and Network Scouts aged 14-25 for a course on bushcraft with Steve and other experienced Instructors from www.hiddenwoods.co.uk on the outskirts of Bath. Skills included shelter building with natural materials and tarps. The different fire lighting techniques including a bow drill, flint and striker and the various types of tinder to use to light a fire. The various ways of collecting water and purifying it. …

Four Young Leaders from Bathampton Scout Group took part in the annual Avon County Winter Challenge, joining other Teams from across Avon. Led by Team Leader Alex, Finn, Ethan and Emily from the WSJ started out at midnight from Shipham in North Somerset, and walked just over 10 miles which included walking around Chew Valley Lake and several extremely boggy footpaths! The Team arrived at Wedmore near Weston Super Mere at about a quarter to eight, in time for bacon sandwiches and successfully managed 4th place.

Ethan, Tom, Josh and Simon have just returned from an action packed trip to the 22nd World Jamboree in Sweden.  The three Scouts were part of Avonsaurus Contingent made up of 36 Scouts from across Bristol and Bath.  Simon was a member of the International Staff team which helps run the camp. All of them had been selected 18 months ago and then trained for this prestigious event that is only held every four years.

Last Friday saw the annual awards ceremony for the Troop and the awarding of our first ever Chief Scouts Gold Awards to members of the 28th. Ethan and Tom were both presented with engraved zippos for completing all of the Scout Challenge Badges as part of their Gold Award.  Ethan also picked up the Scout of The Year plaque for all his efforts in leading his Patrol and his input into the Troop including the design of this website.

Last Saturday was Avon County Scouts Bear Hunt event which featured many famous bears including the Chief Scout – Bear Grylls – visiting Ashton Court and Bristol Docks along with thousands of Scouts from across the County.  Six scouts attended from the 28th, met the Chief Scout and tried out the actitvities at the Bear Hunt, which included water zorbing, inflatables and lots of candy floss!
Not to be outdone by the Scouts, Bathampton Cubs also met Bear at thier District Cub Camp at the Wiltshire Scout camp site in Potterne on Saturday. Bear flew in by helicopter and …
