Last Friday the 28th Bathampton Scouts came together with English Heritage and set up camp in the grounds of Farleigh Hungerford Castle. 20 local scouts brought the sunshine with them and enjoyed a tour of the castle, taking in – amongst other things – the lead coffins in the crypt and the rare medieval portraits in the chapel. Bathampton Scouts followed in the footsteps of their Chief Scout – Bear Grylls – famed for his survival and TV programmes.
The Scouts aged 10 ½ to 15 spent 4 evenings at on the outskirts of Bath, leaning how to make penny stoves using old cans and then boiling water on them to make their hot drinks. The Scouts learnt different types of fire lighting methods including a fire bow, flint and striker and how to make feather sticks and how fire is used for cooking, signalling, warmth and light.

21 Scouts, all aged between 10 – 14, from Bathampton enjoyed a fun packed though
muddy adventure in Dorset over the May bank holiday. Despite their first campsite
being flooded and their Land Rover – with all the Scouts’ belongings on board –
getting stuck in the mud, they all had a brilliant time!

Siblings Alex (11) and Kiera (13) have become the first Scouts in Bath ever to pass their Dinghy Sailor Activity Badge after completing their RYA Dingy Sailing Level Two. They also duo gained their Music Badges for playing the Violin and Cello respectively. Kiera, who is a Black Belt in Karate, was awarded her Martial Arts Badge and the Physical Recreation Badge for her other hobby Dancing. Both were presented with their Entertainers Badges for the numerous concerts they have been involved in.

Four Young Leaders from Bathampton Scout Group took part in the annual Avon County Winter Challenge, joining other Teams from across Avon. Led by Team Leader Alex, Finn, Ethan and Emily from the WSJ started out at midnight from Shipham in North Somerset, and walked just over 10 miles which included walking around Chew Valley Lake and several extremely boggy footpaths! The Team arrived at Wedmore near Weston Super Mere at about a quarter to eight, in time for bacon sandwiches and successfully managed 4th place.

The annual Avon Scout County Shooting Competition was held at Chelwood on 25th September. Sixty-six Scouts from across North Somerset, Bath, Bristol, and South Gloucestershire took part on the day, including local Scouts from Bathampton and Combe Down. The event was organised by the Avon Scout Rifle Club and supervised by qualified instructors. The competitive activities included archery, field targets, precision shooting, three-position shooting and clay pigeon shooting. Young people from Bathampton Beaver Colony and Cub Pack recently enjoyed a day out to Legoland Windsor.The youngsters joined over three hundred and fifty other young people and their leaders from all over Bath for the trip to the theme park.
During their trip the Beavers got to ride the dragon rollercoaster and the jolly rocker pirate ship as well as taking part in the fire academy team challenge – driving a mini fire engine and pumping water to put out a fire.The Cubs enjoyed the dragon apprentice ride, the driving …

For the second year running, Scouts from Bathampton joined Hampshire Explorer Scouts and their Leaders at the annual Wilderness Gathering in Wiltshire. The Gathering is one of the few events nationally just for people who enjoy all things bushcraft and brings all sorts of experts in from knife makers, to trackers and basket weavers.

The Scouts watched or took part in all sorts of activities including fire lighting, bow fires, gutting rabbits, treasure hunts, bivi building, campfire singing as well as looking around all the trade stands. To find out more …

Ethan, Tom, Josh and Simon have just returned from an action packed trip to the 22nd World Jamboree in Sweden.  The three Scouts were part of Avonsaurus Contingent made up of 36 Scouts from across Bristol and Bath.  Simon was a member of the International Staff team which helps run the camp. All of them had been selected 18 months ago and then trained for this prestigious event that is only held every four years.

After leaving the Four Seasons Jamboree in the pouring rain and mud, the Troop went on to the annual troop camp at Rempstone near Corfe Castle in Dorset.
This was a greenfield site surrounded by pine forests, a stream, only one house in the distance and more importantly blazing sunshine from the moment we arrived!
This was the camp we had been looking forward to and working towards for the past year. It was a traditional summer camp with the Scouts camping in their Patrols, building their campsites and cooking on  wood fires.
